Tinka: There is one particular thrift store that has 144 wedding dresses that somebody donated. These dresses are absolutely stunning. Most of them went for $500 to $1000 per dress, retail. Now you can get these dresses on the 2nd market for usually less than $100. I think some of them are $125, but most of them are under $100. And if they think you really need to get it, and can’t afford it, I guarantee you, they will work with you. You don’t have to pay the whole price. There is just about every kind of wedding dress imaginable, almost every thrift store you go in, they have a section where they have wedding dresses.

Vivienne: And tuxes, too, right?

Tinka: Yes. You may have to have it cleaned, but it’s not going to cost you a whole lot — you will get a $1000 gown, and it will cost you $65 to clean it. So if you’re trying to save money on your wedding — and weddings are very expensive today — I think it would be a good idea for you to go around to thrift stores, and see what you can find. You may not find what you’re looking for, but it’s worth the try! A lot of these gowns are brand new, never been worn — they might have been tried on, but they’ve never been worn. And most of them have a price tag of $500 – $700 – $1000. There’s some Vera Wang, and there’s other names that you would know, if you now about bridal.

Vivienne: So if you just got engaged, and you’re planning your wedding next June, start prowling the thrift stores now looking for that perfect dress, and save a bundle!

10% off at our favorite eBay seller, and she has “Boosha Beads!”

You may have noticed in our blog roll that we have our favorite ebay seller listed. Well, she has agreed to give a 10% discount to anyone who buys from her, if they mention that they heard about her from Second Market Shopping! $300 Oleg Cassini blouse for $5!

Another great find I made while yard sale-ing was this beautiful Oleg Cassini blouse. Tinka saw it in one of the thrift stores we visited and showed me, telling me it would retail for around $300.00. It was being sold for $5! “Do you want it?” she asked me. “Absolutely!” I declared, without a moment’s hesitation. I have never seen such beautiful bead work on an article of clothing — the collar and sleeves are literally dripping with stunning black bead work.

I’ve got video of this item too — I’ll try to get it posted here soon.

Yard sale-ing this weekend? Having a yard sale?

Don’t forget these tips from Tinka:

“1: Make sure to leave early – I like to have breakfast first, and start out around 9 am, but many leave earlier and you don’t want to miss out on the best merchandise!

2. Bring plenty of change, lots of $1 bills and coins.

Having a yard sale? One word: SIGNAGE!

Use neon colors to make your signs more visible, and put at least three or four up in different places. Neighbors who want to rain on your parade by pulling up one sign rarely go to the trouble to get them all, but if you don’t have good signage customers won’t be able to find you.”

My [Vivienne's] personal recommendations:

1: If you are holding a yard sale, stay out of the sun as much as possible. Set up a chair in the back of the garage and only come out when you have customers.

2: Wear plenty of sunscreen anyway! If you get busy you may be out in the sun more than you think, and if you are going to yard sales you’ll be out in the sun most of the day.

3: Drink plenty of water! Even if you are just sitting quietly, with hardly any customers, the heat sucks the moisture right out of you and it is easy to get dehydrated (especially here in Florida). And nothing tastes better than a cold bottle of water when you’ve been walking around shopping for a couple of hours!

Kids, here’s a great business tip: if someone in your neighborhood is having a yard sale, set up a lemonade stand nearby or on the route in or out from the main road. One weekend I was ready to kill for a drink, because I’d forgotten to bring a bottle of water with me and I was dying of thirst. Then I caught sight of an enterprising young man sitting with his father in front of his house with a lemonade stand, selling a 16 oz. cup of lemonade for $1. It was delicious, the quantity was just what I needed, and the price was right. Smart kid!
